About the Smith & Wesson Model 617
The Model 617 is a double-action/single-action revolver manufactured by Smith & Wesson in the United States. It is a full-size, steel-framed, 10-round revolver chambered in .22 LR, built on S&W's K-frame platform and designed primarily for target shooting, plinking, and training.
How the California versions differ
- Barrel length: Three distinct lengths are available — 4 inches (SKU 160584A), 4.125 inches (Mountain Gun), and 6 inches (SKU 160578 and 160578A) — affecting balance, sight radius, and portability.
- Mountain Gun variant: The 617 Mountain Gun features a tapered barrel profile and lighter overall weight compared to the standard heavy-barrel models.
- Grips: The 617-6 models with SKUs 160578 and 160578A are specifically noted as having S&W Logo Grips, while the Mountain Gun listing specifies no grip detail (NIL).
- SKU variants 160578 vs. 160578A: These share the same listed specs and MSRP; the "A" suffix typically denotes a minor internal or cosmetic revision by the manufacturer.
- Price range: MSRP varies across the family, from $569 for the Mountain Gun up to $1,019 for the 6-inch models, reflecting differences in configuration and barrel length.
Who it suits
The Model 617 is well suited to target shooters, new handgun owners developing fundamentals, and experienced shooters seeking an affordable .22 LR platform for high-volume practice.
