Is the Walther PDP legal in California?
Yes. 6 versions of the Walther PDP are on the California DOJ Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale as of October 26, 2026, so California dealers can sell those exact versions new. Only the specific versions listed on this page are certified: a different finish, barrel length or caliber that is not listed is off-roster and can only be bought through a private party transfer at a licensed dealer.

About the Walther PDP
The Walther PDP (Performance Duty Pistol) is a striker-fired, polymer-frame semi-automatic handgun manufactured by Carl Walther GmbH in Germany. It is designed as a full-featured duty and defensive pistol, built around an optics-ready slide and an ergonomic grip intended to accommodate a wide range of hand sizes.
How the California versions differ
- All six roster-listed versions are chambered in 9mm — no other calibers are offered in the California-approved lineup.
- Barrel length divides the lineup into two groups: the Compact models have a 4.0" barrel, while the Full Size models have a 4.5" barrel, resulting in a slightly taller and longer overall package.
- The Compact is offered in standard black and an Alloy Gray finish, giving buyers two frame and slide color options at that size.
- The Full Size is available in four finishes: standard black, Alloy Gray, Alloy FDE (flat dark earth), and Alloy OD Green, providing broader color choices at the larger size.
- Beyond finish and barrel length, the Compact and Full Size versions differ in grip length, which affects magazine capacity and overall concealability.
Who it suits
The PDP is well suited to home defense, range use, and duty carry, with the Compact size offering a more concealable option for those who may also consider concealed carry where legally permitted.
