About the Springfield Armory 1911 EMP
Springfield Armory's Enhanced Micro Pistol (EMP) is a purpose-built, smaller-frame 1911-platform semi-automatic handgun manufactured by Springfield Armory. Unlike standard 1911s that are scaled down from a full-size frame, the EMP was engineered from the ground up around smaller calibers and compact dimensions, making it a natural fit for concealed carry and everyday use.
How the California versions differ
- Caliber: Three versions are chambered in .45 ACP (PI9132L, PI9140L) and two in 9mm (PI9209L, PI9134L).
- Barrel length: The PI9209L is a compact model with a 3.1" barrel, while PI9132L, PI9134L, and PI9140L all feature a full 5" barrel.
- Ambidextrous safety: The three 5" barrel models (PI9132L, PI9134L, PI9140L) are specified with an ambidextrous safety; the compact PI9209L is not listed with this feature.
- Price point: The PI9140L (.45 ACP, 5") carries a significantly lower MSRP of $749 compared to the $1,119 MSRP of the other 5" models, likely reflecting differences in finish or component tier.
- Size: The PI9209L compact is the smallest option in this roster group and is the most carry-oriented configuration.
Who it suits
The EMP family appeals to 1911 enthusiasts who want a refined, single-action platform scaled for concealed carry or those who simply prefer a trimmer 1911 for range use and home defense.
