Is the Glock 17 Gen 5 Legal in California?
Not on the roster
The Glock 17 Gen 5 is not on the California DOJ handgun roster, so California dealers cannot sell it new. It is still legal to own, and you can buy one used from another California resident through a private party transfer at a licensed dealer.
The Glock 17 Gen 5 is the full-size 9mm Glock used by many police departments, popular for home defense, duty use and competition. It is not among the 997 handguns currently certified for sale in California. A handgun stays off the roster when its maker has not submitted it for state testing, or when it lacks a feature California requires for semi-automatic pistols, such as a chamber load indicator or magazine disconnect. Roster status is checked daily against the DOJ.
The Glock ban (AB 1127)
Even Glock models that are on the roster cannot be sold new by California dealers since July 1, 2026. AB 1127 bars dealer sales of pistols with a cruciform trigger bar that can be converted to fully automatic, which covers nearly all Glocks. It does not ban owning one or buying one through a private party transfer. Read the AB 1127 explainer.
How to get a Glock 17 Gen 5 in California
